Apache Harmony - Building Java SE in Open Source

Apache Harmony is a project of the Apache Software Foundation charged with the creation and maintenance of open-source software implementing Java virtual machines, related class libraries, and other software that is commonly associated with Java platforms. Currently, the project is building a compatible implementation of Java Platform, Standard Edition 5 (Java SE 5). Since it's inception in May of 2005, the Apache Harmony project has achieved significant progress in a short period of time, assembling and developing a near-complete implementation of the Java SE 5 class library, as well as several java virtual machines with such modern features as configurable garbage collectors and Just-In-Time compilation of Java bytecode to native machine code. This session gives an overview of the project, describes the status of the project to date, and shares the lessons learned in building code and community for such a broad and technically difficult project. The presentation is aimed at practitioners and developers with an interest in open source innovation involving the Java platform and includes a demo of the Harmony code to date.
