Open Source is getting increasingly hard to define, as the number of players, projects and licenses leads to different interpretations of what Open Source really is. We need better definitions, and we need a taxonomy of Open Source. Open Development is about defining Open Source software built using a collaborative model based on communities and consensus: the virtuous cycle promoting cooperation and encouraging feedback known as the software commons. Open Source defines legal boundaries around software distribution, regardless of how software is produced, evolved and maintained. Open Development is about capturing the advantages of collaborative processes: peer review, distributed innovation, vendor lock-in reduction, control over the evolution of code, digital preservation. The presentation will provide an overview of what Open Development is, some insights on difference and similarities with other Open Source models, and why Open Development matters to your business.
