This talk will discuss how science depends on software, and how NSF attempts to encourage and support the software that will enable the most science. It will provide examples of the infrastructure that enables science, discuss NSF’s vision and programs for such infrastructure, and then cover some challenges and open questions that the open source community may be able to answer.
