ApacheCon US 2005 Leads the Wave of Open Source

FOREST HILL, MD -- (MARKET WIRE) -- 09/27/2005 -- ApacheCon announced today the opening of registration for ApacheCon US 2005, taking place December 10-14 at the Sheraton Hotel and Marina San Diego, California.

The official conference of The Apache Software Foundation (ASF), ApacheCon unites the industry's leading Open Source developers and users in a relaxed, hands-on environment to share real world insight and promote common understanding of key Apache software projects, including Apache HTTP Server, the world's leading Web server.

ApacheCon US 2005 follows the conference's highly successful return to Europe this past July, and features an ambitious program that champions the increasing demand to gain competitive edge through the innovation, implementation, and integration of non-proprietary solutions to meet a wider international market.

    The Rise Of Open Source

By bringing together the pioneers, developers, and users of flagship Open Source technologies, ApacheCon provides an influential platform for dialogue, between the speaker and the audience, between project contributors and the community at large, traversing a wide range of ideas, expertise, and personalities.

"We are witnessing a shift of power in the growing influence of Open Source, bringing a critical need for a new generation of developers to provide innovative solutions at all levels," said ApacheCon chairman Ken Coar. "We are committed to help educate and nurture the community by sharing ideas and experiences with leading industry experts, as well as independent developers, academics, and visionaries."

    Open For Business

The spike in demand is evidenced by the significant amount of interest in ApacheCon: an all-time high number of papers were submitted for consideration for the conference program. More than 100 sessions highlight core and next-generation Apache server issues aimed at both the technologist as well as implementer -- the most representative body in Apache-based development -- and includes Apache HTTP Server, Derby, Geronimo, Lenya, James, Axis, Lucene, Cocoon, Tomcat, SpamAssassin, Tapestry, Struts, and more.

ApacheCon presenters and faculty include some of the most accomplished and respected leaders in the Open Source community. Keynote speakers include journalist, author, and EFF mouthpiece Cory Doctorow on "Open Source is not a Crime -- Yet!," as well as Sun Microsystems' Vice President of Engineering Karen Tegan. Presenters include Brian W. Fitzpatrick, Rasmus Lerdorf, Geir Magnusson Jr., Geoffrey Young, Philippe M. Chiasson, Ted Leung, Paul Querna, and Cliff Schmidt.

The conference kicks off with intensive full- and half-day tutorials that offer real world insight, techniques, and methodologies pivotal to the increasing demand for open source software. Attendees hone their skills, learn shortcuts and hacks and solve programming challenges on a variety of topics, including Forrest, Maven, PHP, Perl, and Subversion. Also offered this year is a one-day track devoted to issues relating to Open Source and business, which will launch with "The Zen of Open" by Simon Phipps.

ApacheCon offers excellent networking opportunities and peer discussions: meet ASF members, speakers, and sponsors during the ApacheCon Expo, receptions, evening events, birds of a feather (BOF) sessions and a number of informal social gatherings. Special conference events include ApacheCon Labs, PGP key signings, help desks, book signings, lighting talks, and the world premiere screening of "FUD," the documentary filmed at OSCOM 4 and ApacheCon US 2004 and directed by original creator of Apache Lenya Michael Wechner.

Sponsors and exhibitors include Black Hat, cafesoft, Covalent, Google, IBM, the Java Community Process (JCP), Thawte, and Sun Microsystems, who returns as a platinum sponsor. Select exhibitor and premier-level sponsorship opportunities are available; contact Delia Frees on +1 707 765 0823 or at delia@apachecon.com for more information.

Media sponsors include BYTE.com, C/C++ Users Journal, Dr. Dobb's Journal, Eclipse, InfoWorld, Java Developers' Journal, Linux World Magazine, O'Reilly Network, PowerBuilder, Software Development Online, Sys Admin Magazine, The Perl Journal, Unix Review, Web Services Journal, and XML Journal. To become a media sponsor, contact Stephen Jones on +1 415 265 7204 or at press@apachecon.com.

    Special Pricing Opportunity

Once again ApacheCon is offering early registration incentives, including savings of up to $200 off regular Tutorial rates, and a tiered discount of up to $500 off the $999 individual registration fee to those who register before 10 October.

The full conference schedule, tutorial descriptions, sponsorship and exhibitor opportunities, and venue details can be found on the ApacheCon US 2005 Website.
